With director Ruben Fleischer making the press rounds for his latest comedy, 30 Minutes or Less, starring Aziz Ansari, Jesse Eisenberg, Nick Swardson, and Danny McBride, there has been some interesting news concerning the director’s breakthrough hit Zombieland and the long-rumored possible sequel.
ComingSoon spoke with the director about the subject, and here’s what he had to say:
“I can promise you it’s something we all want to do. I think the reality of it happening is getting less and less real. It’s just harder and harder every day because everybody’s gotten really busy, and the reality is that we’ve never had a script that we’ve all just fallen in love with. Until there’s a script that we all can say, ‘This is it,’ it’s more of an idea than an actual thing that we can work towards prioritizing and realizing.”
Bad news for fans, but it’s understandable. At the same time, he’s not saying it will never happen. Over the past few years, we’ve seen more, and longer gestating, sequels actually come to fruition. If you told someone in 1995 that there would eventually be a fourth Indiana Jones film, they would have slapped your stupid mouth. Nowdays, it’s a reality.
I’d personally love to see a sequel, especially the return of Woody Harrelson as Tallahasse, one of the zaniest and most bad ass characters he’s ever portrayed. So while the sequel may seem like a distant dream, it’s still possible it will happen one day when Eisenberg, Harrelson, and Fleischer have less on their plate, which could happen faster than they think.
Meanwhile, Fleischer is gearing up for his next feature, The Gangster Squad, written by LAPD Homicide Detective Will Beall and already boasting an impressive cast that includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Bryan Cranston, and Josh Brolin, among other big names. While it’s disappointing we won’t see Zombieland 2 sooner rather than later, at least the director is giving us some good new films while we wait. 30 Minutes or Less opens in theaters on August 12.
