The Avengers is Marvel’s most successful movie to date. It was also the riskiest project they’ve ever assembled and it paid off and then some. The X-Men franchise is Fox’s bread and butter of the Marvel universe, because there are so many different characters and stories to be told.
X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner wants a crossover.
She’s been with the X-Men films since the beginning and she’s friends with Avengers director/Marvel consultant Joss Whedon. She was grabbed for a quote from Crave and this is what she had to say:
I would love [to cross them over]. I personally have close ties to Marvel because of Kevin Feige, because Kevin worked for me. But to take our characters and mingle them in the way that they were written, yeah, absolutely.
You know, this really isn’t out of the realm of possibility. Maybe 5 or 10 years ago this could have never happened, but with studios constantly talking about trading rights for certain flicks, you just never know. Marvel was willing to play ball with Fox on their Daredevil fiasco, allowing Fox to continue work on the now debunk film if they would have lent some Fantastic Four characters to them.
The Avengers almost had a glimpse of the Oscorp Tower in the final film, which belongs to Sony and their Spider-Man rights.
I think Marvel and all of the movie studios are realizing that it’s just flat out stupid to keep these characters locked away at their respective studios. Cross promotion would only help both companies and deepen the comic-book universe.
We are certainly a ways away from X-Men and Avengers co-existing on screen in full-form, but we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of minor characters making brief appearances in other films. I’d totally like to see this come to life. What about you?
