In a recent interview with The New York Times, Oscar-winning writer and director Woody Allen revealed that he’s considering returning to stand-up comedy and wants to write a film for him and Louis C.K. to star in together (say what!?). Apparently, Allen discovered Louis C.K. while he was watching actor Bobby Cannavale’s audition tape for Blue Jasmine, which Louis C.K. appears in during a skit.
“I didn’t know Louis C.K. at all. But someone showed me a tape of Bobby Cannavale – it was to see Bobby Cannavale, and he was in a skit with Louis C.K. Cannavale, I thought, yes, he’s great and right for this part. And I said but who’s that guy with him? He’s wonderful. So we had him originally for the Andrew Dice Clay part. And he read it, and he read it very well. We thought, he’s so likeable. He’s clearly such a sweet guy. I was dying to use him in something, so we used him to play the sweeter guy.”
It’s not surprising that Woody Allen had most recently discovered the genius of Louis C.K. despite the fact that Louis C.K. is on a roll as of late with his FX show Louie. The director is constantly busy, whether it’s working on his annual new film or playing music in New York. Now that Allen has worked with the Louis C.K. on Blue Jasmine, he’s inspired to think of an idea for a film that they can star in together.
“I’d love to do a movie with him and me, a comedy. I’m looking for some idea that would work, for the two of us to do. When I finished Blue Jasmine, I went into my room and thought, ‘what would be a fun picture? My first thought for a while was, ‘Can I come up with something at the moment that I could do with Louis C.K.?’ But I wasn’t able to get the right idea, and time was starting to move. Of course I hope that people aren’t disappointed that I don’t act with him in Blue Jasmine, and he doesn’t have a commensurately comic part with his talent. But some day, I will get something that we could do together, because I do think it would be fun. I’m such a great fan of his.”
This is amazing news. I can’t even begin to imagine how fantastic a Woody Allen film starring Woody Allen himself and Louis C.K. would turn out. Hopefully it won’t take too long for this to become a reality. For now, Woody Allen is working on his next currently untitled project. Although details are scarce at this point, what’s known so far is that Colin Firth and Emma Stone are in it and it’s set in France in the 1920s and 1930s. What do you think of the possibility of Woody Allen and Louis C.K. being in a movie together? Allen’s next film Blue Jasmine starring Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins opens on July 26th.
