The best on-screen Hulk is easily the one seen in Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers. Mark Ruffalo did an okay job as Bruce Banner, but the actual green guy was funny, strong and all-over-the-place. Perhaps Hulk is just a better fit when he has others to work with or maybe Marvel finally got it right with Whedon’s direction?
The Incredible Hulk still remains my favorite when we’re strictly speaking about Bruce Banner, because Edward Norton‘s added depth and personal turmoil was much stronger than Eric Bana‘s confused performance and Mark Ruffalo‘s two-man job. In Ruffalo’s defense, he and Norton were approaching the character with very different mindsets, but I still prefer Norton’s interpretation.
Kevin Feige was discussing with MTV about the possibilities of another Hulk solo film and how it probably won’t happen until after The Avengers 2. Here’s a brief excerpt from the conversation:
“I don’t think there’s a lot that we couldn’t do someday, as the cinematic universe continues to grow and expand and get as big as the comic book universe. ’Planet Hulk’ is a cool story. ‘World War Hulk’ is a cool story… I think there are pitfalls of continuity-overload, and mythology getting so dense that it almost collapses in on itself. It happens every few decades or so in the comics. Apart from that, I’d say everything is on the table.”
“Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in ‘Avengers’? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until ‘Avengers 2. So there’s a lot of time to think about it.”
That’s too bad, but it makes a lot of sense. The Incredible Hulk was one of the lowest grossing Marvel films if talking about The Avengers crew on their own and Marvel has their hands pretty much tied up with Captain America 2, Thor 2, Iron Man 3 and multiple other productions. Hulk might be better left off of the solo film whiteboard. He should at least pop up in someone else’s solo film though.
Do you want another Hulk-only film from Marvel or are you happy watching him smash alongside friends?
