So Green Lantern made about $53 million at the box office on opening weekend and it has already started to drop over 60% for this current weekend and yet Warner Brothers is still planning a sequel. The film cost an estimated $200 million dollars to make with another $100 million for advertising and I doubt it is going to get close to reaching that and yet they still are planning a sequel! While that is kind of surprising when comparing the numbers it really isn’t surprising when you think about Warner Brothers current state. As Devin said on B.A.D., Harry Potter is coming to an end, which is the studios milking cow and Christopher Nolan plans on ending Batman with The Dark Knight Rises, so that doesn’t leave them a lot of options.
Superhero movies are really hot right now and I see that slowing down in the next few years, so this is their chance to get all the money they can. How else are you going to compete with the massive company known as Marvel? Honestly, if Batman and Superman can’t help you then I doubt the Green Lantern will, but if they make a sequel cheap enough and more importantly, good enough, people will come. I fucking hated the first film, you can read my review here, but I’d still probably check out a second one if it was in the hands of another director.
Maybe Warner Brothers needs to realize that they are too late to the party. Marvel has already established Iron Man and Thor and they plan on establishing Captain America later this summer, with the end result being the all-star film, The Avengers. I doubt Warner Brothers will be able to recreate that kind of success with DC.
Who knows what the future will bring us, one thing we do know is that we will be seeing another Green Lantern. Would you see it if the studios got their heads on straight and made a decent movie?
