Universal Will Be Releasing ‘The Purge’ Sequel Next Summer

Earlier this month, it was announced that director James DeMonaco would be returning to write and direct The Purge 2. With the sequel starting production next month, Universal has already set an official release date of June 20th, 2014.

The first film starred Ethan Hawke and was produced by Blumhouse Productions (Paranormal Activity and Insidious) on a budget of $3 million and went on to make nearly $90 million, so a budget only seemed inevitable. Plot details are currently unknown but it’s heavily speculated that The Purge 2 might actually be titled The Zone.

Before it was announced that DeMonaco was returning to write and direct the sequel, Bloody-Disgusting pointed out a tweet from Production Weekly that noted that a film titled The Zone was going to start shooting in Los Angeles in December and is going to be produced by Jason Blum and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes banner with DeMonaco writing and directing. It’s unclear if it’s the title of The Purge 2 or if it’s entirely a different project.
