Tom Hardy Wants To Play ‘The Punisher’

The Punisher has had a very difficult time connecting with audiences theatrically, despite being one of the best Marvel comic book properties.

There’s been word going around that he could enter Phase 2 of Marvel’s street-level Netflix characters, but right now nothing is confirmed or even set in place publicly.

The character has had a total of three films that tried to tell his tale, with The Punisher (2004) being the most widely acclaimed, which starred Thomas Jane as the skull-wearing revenge seeker, while I personally thought Ray Stevenson‘s Punisher: War Zone best captured the look and feel of the comics, while also being a perfectly good over-the-top R-rated gore-fest, which featured The Punisher’s rival Jigsaw among many other characters from his world.

No one knows what Marvel wants to do exactly with him just yet, but Mad Max: Fury Road star Tom Hardy mentioned wanting to play the character when doing press for Fury Road and being asked what he wanted to do next.

Here’s the official quotes:

“I want The Punisher… I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something…I don’t know what I want.”

You as Punisher could be very interesting.

HARDY: I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs].

But I actually think that adds to the character.

HARDY: Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?

Yeah. It’s Frank Castle.

Tom Hardy wouldn’t exactly be my first pick as the next version of the character, but if his popularity means seeing The Punisher back on some sort of screen soon, well then I’m all for it.

Marvel has been doing very well bringing all of their characters to life again and I have no doubt that they could finally nail The Punisher once and for all.

Would you like to see Hardy take on the role or perhaps you have someone else in mind? Let us know down below in the comments.
