Tom Cruise Will Be Back For ‘Mission: Impossible 5’

Paramount Pictures and Skydance have officially confirmed that Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in the fifth Mission: Impossible film. According to the official press release, a director and screenwriter will both be announced in the very near future.

At one time it was rumored that Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie will helm the fifth installment but it has been recently announced that he will be directing a remake of the 1960s thriller Ice Station Zebra. So it’s unlikely that he’ll be directing. Mission: Impossible 5 will be produced by Tom Cruise, Paramount, and J.J. AbramsBad Robot.

It makes sense for Tom Cruise to come back. In general, the Mission: Impossible franchise is one of the most successful franchises in history. The franchise has earned over $2 billion at the worldwide box office. Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol was the most successful of the franchise yet. The fourth installment earned a healthy $700 million worldwide. It’s wise to guess that one of the reasons why the franchise is a success is because of Cruise himself. The actor is still very much a draw and has never been better.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Tom on ‘Mission: Impossible’ once again,” said Paramount Pictures president and CEO Brad Grey. “The last installment of the Mission series was the biggest in the life of this franchise. Tom has been at the heart of its success and we look forward to his great talent, and the continued global appeal for another Mission, to drive fans around the world to the next chapter of this series.”

It wouldn’t surprise me if Paramount adds this film to their 2015 release schedule.
