Back in 2010, Tom Cruise was attached to star in the action thriller El Presidente and was trying to get Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Nicholson to co-star. At the time, Jay Roach (Game Change and The Campaign) was set to direct but the project didn’t move forward. Now it appears that Tom Cruise is trying to get the film off the ground with the help of Warner Bros. and his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. Cruise and Liman are making en effort to get Jack Nicholson to sign on for a key role in the film.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the project, the story follows a Secret Service agent (Cruise) who’s assigned to protect a womanizing and alcoholic former president whose life is threatened. It appears that Cruise really wants Nicholson for the part, as it’s known that the actor has been pursuing Nicholson for a few years. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cruise and Liman went to Nicholson’s home to convince him to join the film and Cruise even went as far to say that he won’t do the movie without him.
It’s been reported that Nicholson has at least agreed to read the script, which was written by Jesse Armstrong (In The Loop) and Daniel J. Groor (The Daily Show) with a rewrite from Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco and Quiz Show). Nicholson is notorious for being picky. In fact, the last film he appeared in was the 2010 romantic comedy How Do You Know but that was only a minor role. It’s been far too long since he has been on the big screen in a major role. The project itself seems like it could be an entertaining reunion for the two actors, who last appeared together in 1992’s A Few Good Men.
