Earlier this year, it seemed very unlikely that Christopher McQuarrie’s action thriller Jack Reacher starring Tom Cruise would become a film franchise. The film ended up surprising us all by making nearly $218 million worldwide, which is plenty for Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions to move forward with a sequel. Although the sequel could be based on any book, it’s been confirmed that the sequel will be based on the latest Jack Reacher novel titled Never Go Back and Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Jack Reacher. Here’s the official synopsis of the novel:
The story follows Reacher as he heads to his old military base in Virginia for a meeting with Major Susan Turner. But his meeting is put on hold as Turner is arrested, leaving Reacher to deal with his own legal entanglement as he encounters a different commanding officer and ends up being accused of a crime he doesn’t remember and a child he doesn’t know. This sets him on a cross-country odyssey to find Turner, clear his name and stay one step ahead of the army, the FBI, the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs trying to keep them apart.
Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures are hoping to bring back Christopher McQuarrie to direct the sequel. If they get McQuarrie to return, that means that this may be a couple years away from taking off considering McQuarrie and Cruise are prepping Mission: Impossible 5.
Either way, I’m more than willing on giving this sequel a shot. While Jack Reacher didn’t impress me, it still garnered my interest as there was much left to be explored with character. Make sure to check back for more updates on Never Go Back as they come our way.
