Back in June, Paramount, Skydance Productions, and Annapurna Pictures had just announced that they would be releasing a new Terminator film on June 26th, 2015. While it was heavily speculated for some time that the film would be Terminator 5, the Terminator franchise will now be rebooted to start a new stand-alone trilogy. So far we know that Shutter Island writer Laeta Kalogridis and Drive Angry writer/director Patrick Lussier will write the screenplay. Now it’s been reported that a director has been found.
According to Variety, Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor has been hired to direct the reboot. Before Taylor, directors such as Ang Lee, Rian Johnson, and Denis Villenueve were in talks but couldn’t reach a deal with the studio.
Plot details are currently unknown. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been vocal about his interest in returning to the franchise so perhaps we’ll see the T-800 terminator back in action in some capacity. While the idea of reboots in general isn’t worth celebrating, the Terminator franchise still has many more story possibilities beyond John Connor. Hiring Alan Taylor to direct is certainly an interesting step into the right direction. What do you think?
