This Week on Blu-ray: December 20th – 26th

Well here we go again folks. I bring to you another week of new releases on Blu-rays.We have quite the array of new releases this week. It’s almost too ridiculous to think that there are seven new releases. The best thing about all of them is they are all different. It’s not like they are even in the same genre. Okay a couple might be but regardless. It is a great week for new releases. Let’s take a gander through them and see which ones stand out this week.

First off we have Warrior starring Tom Hardy, who is currently filming as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. I wasn’t able to catch this one while it was in theaters however Jeremy was able to see it when it hit theaters, here’s what he had to say.

Warrior is a film that goes against all the odds. It’s full of very real characters that can be described as good or bad. It has a story that can be called cliché and unoriginal on paper, but then it surprises everyone in the way it fleshes everything out and truly becomes its own film.”

Warrior is being releases as a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy package. It was one of those ones that looked awesome in the trailer but wasn’t sure how it was actually going to turn out. Regardless, this is going to be a blind buy for me. I’m sure I’ll like it when all is said and done.

Now the next release was one that took the theaters by storm. It didn’t get a huge start out of the gate however it was one that wouldn’t go away. The more people that saw it the more word got out that it was outstanding. It started out as a limited release film in May and by June it went wide raking in over $56 million through a solid 30 weeks. Midnight in Paris is being released as a single Blu-ray disc. This is going to be another blind buy for me right out of the gate. I know I’ll enjoy this film. Jeremy went and saw this one also while it was in theaters and here’s what he had to say.

“Overall, Woody Allen knocks it out of the park with Midnight in Paris. It’s a very soft film that deals with heavy emotions and thoughts that everyone thinks about at one point or another. Owen Wilson gives a very personal performance that is a bit of a surprise. The story is simple in formula and yet unique in its own way.”

Another film that is being releases today is that of Dolphin Tale. This is not a film that interested me in the slightest. It’s supposedly based on a true story of a courageous dolphin named Winter and the people that formed together to save her life. Dolphin Tale snuck out of no where in the theaters to be quite honest. I hadn’t seen a single thing about it until all the sudden it beats the likes of Abduction (that’s an easy one), Killer Elite and just comes shy of beating Moneyball for the top earning film the weekend of September 23rd. Regardless it nearly doubled its production budget. Warner Bros. is distributing this film in three different packages. You’ll be able to find it in a 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy package as well as the normal Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy pack. Also for the people who don’t care about the two other forms, the single Blu-ray pack.

Moving on, these next ones will be a quick overlook. Straw Dogs (2011) is being releases. This was a remake of the 1971 film in which a screenwriter and his actress wife return home after the following of her father’s death. As they are trying to sell the house tensions rise and they start to have marriage issues. Que the ex-boyfriend and now everything is ten times worse and blows up into a violent situation. Straw Dogs is being released as a single Blu-ray disc. Another Blu-ray release this week is Colombiana. Colombiana stars Zoe Saldana as an assassin who had to watch her parents get murdered. She trains to be the best with one goal in mind: revenge. Colombiana is being releases as a Blu-ray and Digital Copy package.

Margin Call is a film that I honestly don’t remember seeing anything for. It’s about an investment firm that has an interesting time during the early part of the 2008 financial crisis. There is an analyst that unlocks things about his firm that he shouldn’t know. Such things could bring down the entire firm. You watch as they make decisions that could cause financial disaster. This looks interesting now because it seems like it is reality. However while it was in theaters it didn’t seem to do very well. I still kind of want to the pull the trigger on this and do a blind buy on it just to see if the reviews I have seen are actually correct. Lionsgate is releasing this one as a single Blu-ray disc.

And well, last but not least we have Glee: The Concert Movie. Yeah, I said it. Glee: The Concert Movie. I’ve never been a huge fan of Glee, to be honest. When I first heard about it my first reactions were “How in the world is this singing television show going to last.” Boy was I wrong. Well 20th Century Fox has released this film as a 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Ditigal Copy pack as well as normal Blu-ray, DVD and Ditigal Copy package.

That pretty much covers this week on the new release front of Blu-rays. I’m sure there are others out there that I’m missing whether it was a music Blu-ray or what not. Make sure to check back next week. It doesn’t look to be the best week next week but I guess we’ll see when it hits us.
