The Metal Roundup: August 3rd, 2011

Here we go.  Another heap of news for those of you who loves the metals like me!  Got some good stuff this week; song premiers, tour announcements, etc.  Let’s get started.

We all know how much I loved the new albums by Fleshgod Apocalypse and Decapitated, so this news has made my fuckin’ month so far.  Both of those incredible bands will be teaming up for a fall tour with the aide of monster shredders Decrepit Birth, Rings of Saturn, and The Haarp Machine!  I’ve squandered two opportunities to see Fleshgod live (most recently at this year’s Summer Slaughter tour, where i arrived too late!) and I will not miss them again.  Plus, I’ve never seen Decapitated live and although almost none of the original members still remain, I am beyond stoked to finally get to watch these Death Metal heathens in person!

Get the full list of dates here.

Speaking of badass tours, progressive metal fans can rejoice as Between the Buried and Me and Animals As Leaders have officially announced a fall tour with support by Tesseract!  As I’m sure many of you guessed by my #2 pick in my top ten drummers list, I am quite a large fan of BTBAM and their beautifully stoic style of progressive metal.  I had the privilege of seeing them live for the 2nd time in my life back in May, during their tour with Job For A Cowboy (bleh), Cephalic Carnage (!), and The Ocean (!!!!!) and my God it was stunning.  They always put on such an enchanting live show that I can’t wait to see what they have in store this go-round.  And though I’ve seen countless live videos, I’ve never seen Animal As Leaders live and will probably melt while I watch Tosin Abasi tear it up on stage.

Dates here.

Enough touring, on to music.  I’m sure you remember a couple weeks ago when I reported that progressive metallers Textures had announced a title for their upcoming album Dualism.  Well, now we’ve got our first taste of new material in the form of the song “Singularity”!

Check it out here.  Honestly, my first impression isn’t all that great, but I’m willing to give the song a chance to grow on me.  It’s not that it’s bad by any means.  It seems a lot more straight-forward than their previous material, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the clean-sung chorus kind of irks me.  I don’t have a problem with clean singing in metal at all, but something about this just isn’t working for me.  Yet.  We’ll see.  Like I said, some albums/songs take a minute to grow on me.  Either way, I’m pretty excited to hear the rest of the album.  I will say though, the last 30 seconds of the song really got me going.  There is hope after all!

Dualism comes out September 27th via Nuclear Blast Records.

While we’re on the subject of prog metal, Leprous have debuted a song off of their upcoming album Bilateral, called “Thorn”.  I’m not too familiar with these guys but they certainly caught my attention when I heard that none other than Ihsahn does guest vocals on the track!  (Apparently most of Leprous is made up of Ihsahn‘s touring band.)  I absolutely LOVED Ihsahn‘s 2010 album After and will listen to anything he has a part in.

Check out the song here.

It’s definitely interesting to say the least.  Parts of it remind me of Protest the Hero while others remind me of (obviously) Ihsahn and Norweigan black-metal-jazz outfit Shining.  I like it.  It definitely shows potential and I’m really interested to hear what else these guys put out.  I’m loving the inclusion of horns and saxophone on the track and Ihsahn‘s contribution is nothing short of outstanding.

Bilateral comes out August 23rd on InsideOut Music.

That’s it for this week.  Keep moshing and I’ll keep writing about it.  Or something like that…
