The Hunger Games Countdown: Character Guide

I have always been intrigued and amused by the names of various characters, whether they be in literature or film – and often I have to wonder what the writer was thinking when they decided on the name for the character. Is there a significance to these insane names, or do the writers think that by making up some ridiculous moniker their character will be better remembered? Whatever the case for Suzanne Collins, I must say, the character names from The Hunger Games are some of the strangest I have ever encountered. Luckily for the readers, Collins only gave us names for a small percentage of the Tributes; the Tributes from districts three and four, as well as districts six through ten are never given names.

Even for someone who has read the books, keeping everyone straight is a challenge. So, I have compiled this handy reference guide to better aid in the recollection of the characters and their relevance to the storyline:

District 12
-Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence)- Girl Tribute; Main Protagonist and Narrator
-Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson)- Boy Tribute; Baker’s Son
-Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) – Katniss’ Best Friend
-Primrose Everdeen (Willow Shields)- Katniss’ Younger Sister
-Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson)- Victor of the 50th Hunger Games; Katniss and Peeta’s Mentor
-Mrs. Everdeen (Paula Malcomson) — Katniss and Prim’s Mother

District 11
-Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi) – Boy Tribute
-Rue (Amandla Stenberg) – Girl Tribute; Small and meek, befriends Katniss

District 5
-“Foxface” (Jacqueline Emerson) – Girl Tribute; Real name never known

District 2
-Cato (Alexander Ludwig) – Boy Tribute; Katniss’ most feared opponent, known for his size and strength
-Clove (Isabelle Fuhrman) – Girl Tribute; Known for her knife skills

District 1
-Marvel (Jack Quaid) – Boy Tribute; Name is unknown in The Hunger Games, revealed in Catching Fire
-Glimmer (Leven Rambin) – Girl Tribute

The Capitol
-President Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) – Autocratic Ruler of Panem; Main Antagonist
-Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) – District Twelve’s Escort; Known for her wild hairstyles and outfits
-Cinna (Lenny Kravitz)- Katniss’ Stylist
-Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci) — Reporter for the Hunger Games; Interview the Tributes before the games begin
-Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) – Head Gamemaker for the 74th Hunger Games

Hopefully this will be a beneficial tool to anyone who, like me, has a hard time recalling the crazy names that these characters have.  I know for me it is helpful when I can finally put a face to the name, and in the case of these odd monikers, a guide like this definitely sorts things out well.

6 days until The Hunger Games
