Looks like The Help is holding onto that number one spot again, after topping Rise of the Planet of the Apes last week. The Help brought in an estimated $4.4 million on Friday, with the Zoe Saldana revenge action flick Colombiana trailing in number two with an estimated $3.7 million. Most were tracking Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark to be the leader of new releases, but it looks like the PG13 actioner is still a late summer seller. Speaking of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, it landed in the number three spot with $3.6 million, which isn’t horrible, but it might make for a tough weekend.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes finally dropped to number four with $2.5 million and Our Idiot Brother debuted at number five with $2.3 million.
The weekend is looking like it’s going to land on the soft side, most likely due to the east coast dealing with the hurricane and partially because late August usually tends to be soft. Most people saw what they wanted for the summer and want to spend time outside and doing other things to wrap up the summer, not go to the movies.
I really hope Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark does good business on Saturday and Sunday, which could lead to it topping Colombiana. I hated Colombiana and I don’t want to see it topping such an effective horror film like Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. I knew Our Idiot Brother was going to have troubles finding a crowd, but it looks like it will open respectable and probably fall off fast, hopefully it was made cheap!
That’s it for Friday. Check back on Monday for the full weekend!
