Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby was supposed to see cinemas (in 3D) on December 25th of this year, but WB decided to pull it last minute with the only news being that it was going to come sometime in the summer of 2013. Some were convinced that this was just another shifting of films to help ease up some cramped weekends and to ensure that the bigger films have more time alone at the box office, while others mentioned Luhrmann having difficulty funding the entire project.
Whatever the case may be it seems that The Great Gatsby will see a 3D theatrical release on May 11th, 2013. The Huffington Post confirms this announcement, which will pit it directly against the second week of Iron Man 3, which opens on May 3rd, 2013.
Is Leonardo DiCaprio big enough to overthrow Robert Downey Jr. from the box office after just one week? I know the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel is widely loved (and an American classic) and the cast as well as Luhrmann are big names in Hollywood, but Marvel and their mega-dominance over the box office with each new comic book movie has me worried for WB and their new plan.
I don’t think Gatsby has enough wide appeal to contend against an already established comic book character in its second week. I see another Dark Shadows on our hands, which opened very poorly around the same time Marvel unleashed The Avengers.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
