The new trailer for God of War: Ascension, the prequel to the entire franchise, has hit the web, and it will also air during the Super Bowl later today. To some, it may seem a rather corny or sappy trailer. I’ve seen some say that it tries too hard to be emotional, and I can see the validity for each of these claims. I’ve also seen many people rather impressed by the trailer, and I share that sentiment. Granted, I am not a big fan of the God of War franchise by any stretch of the imagination; I’m sure I’ve gone so far as to call it my least favorite Playstation-exclusive franchise on a number of occasions. I am, frankly, disappointed that a trilogy that could have been such a great example of a Greek tragedy in video games, frustratingly became the meaningless story of an unstable psychopath. Ascension intrigues me though, as it might have a better narrative than “Kratos is pissed. Kill everything until everything is dead”, which was pretty much God of War II and III. Yes, he’s pissed in the first one too, but his anger had meaning.
This really isn’t the forum for that discussion, but maybe it’ll pop up again around God of War: Ascension‘s release date of March 12th, 2013. Until then, enjoy the trailer, and remember to bet on San Francisco.[springboard type=”video” id=”658953″ player=”dlyr002″ width=”600″ height=”365″ ]
