It’s not really hot news anymore, but I figured it was still worth noting that Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises has officially passed 1 billion dollars as of sometime last week. Box Office Mojo reports that it is only the second franchise with two films to pass $1 billion and it is currently sitting at number ten, just behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
I’m still a bit surprised seeing it track so far behind this year’s other big hit, The Avengers. Obviously there were some unfortunate events that held back The Dark Knight Rises from opening higher than The Avengers, but I thought for sure it was going to catch up and at least close within a few million. I guess Marvel clearly had the advantage due to their film being a lighter affair and in 3D.
The Dark Knight Rises is currently estimated to close around $1.1 billion dollars for worldwide box office gross.
