The Avengers Opens With $80 Million On Friday & Highest Superhero Midnight Launch

Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers is finally here, in the US. After being released overseas last week, The Avengers finally lands on a massive 4,300+ screens, in both 2D and 3D. While the midnight launch didn’t top the latest Harry Potter or Twilight, it did manage to become the highest opening for a superhero movie yet, with $18.7 million, with translates slighter higher than The Dark Knight‘s $18.5 million.

The film earned $80.5 million on Friday alone, which didn’t beat the last Harry Potter‘s $91.1 million dollars, but seeing how it’s tracking it might set a new opening weekend record somewhere in the $200 million dollar area.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to any, but it’s still kind of exciting to see a movie like this break all the records after having to sit back and watch The Hunger Games take so many box office records earlier this year.

I’m very curious to see how The Dark Knight Rises fits into all of this, because I still think more people will show up for that one, but the film isn’t in 3D, so it won’t have that surcharge to tally into its total.

Have you seen The Avengers yet? Are you planning to this weekend?
