*Note from the editor. This was supposed to run in mid-August, but it somehow got lost in the shuffle and is now finally making its way to the front page. I apologize for that and hope that most of this list is still up-to-date.*
Hey guys, how’s it going? With the lack of any games I’ve been able to buy lately, mostly due to me having to save for the big gaming season this year, I haven’t really had much to review. So I was hoping maybe until I’m able to pick up a big title this year, an article to recap 2012 so far and also to give my most anticipated games in the second half of the year might hold you over. I picked out my top 12 best games so far this year (only going as far as June 30th) and then managed to slim my list of most anticipated games to just 13. You can also pretty much expect that my GOTY award winner is more than likely going to come from this list, but only console releases, not the arcade type games. So here we go! Lets start with the first half of 2012 and pick out my top 12!
Top 12 Best of 2012: 1st Half
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning – February 7th
This game I’d say took me by surprise. It was announced that if you downloaded and played the demo for this game, you would unlock special stuff for Mass Effect 3. That right there had me hooked as I was all kinds of pumped for Mass Effect 3 to hit! So I downloaded the demo and fired it up, and what I got reminded me of the Crackdown/Halo 3 syndrome where everyone bought Crackdown to be in the Halo 3 beta only to find out they had bought a GREAT game! I loved my time in the demo of this game and it actually warranted me going to Gamestop and buying the game! And my feelings never really changed once I played it. It was a very solid RPG esque game! Which makes it that much harder for me to see that 38 Studios had closed down because the game didn’t sell enough copies. So I doubt I’ll ever see the sequel that I badly wanna see, but at least they provided me with a great game to play.
Gotham City Imposters – February 7th
This is another shocker of mine from 2012. I picked this up on a whim, bored of playing Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 for a few months, I had heard about this game I believe in December of 2011 and when it came out, I had some credit stored on my PSN so I said screw it and bought it. Wow! I was amazed! It basically plays just like a Call of Duty game, but in the universe of Batman. You have 2 teams, one of them is the Bats (Batman hero types) and then the Joker gang (which reminds you of the clown goons from the Batman movies). Its a FPS but it adds variety. There’s gadgets like the grappling gun to speed you across the map and up on buildings. There’s also the glider rig that allows you to glide for a short amount of time when you find a trampoline or an air duct. It really is a lot of fun! I highly recommend picking it up, plus as of this writing, you can get it for free with a PlayStation Plus subscription.
UFC Undisputed 3 – February 14th
I’m sure most of you have read my review on this game, or at least I hope so. If not, go check it out. I won’t delve into it too much here other than saying I love it and its the best UFC game to date. But at E3 2012, UFC announced a new partnership with EA. So no more THQ UFC games, which is sad to me because despite the lack of sales, the series was heading in the right direction and I’m afraid EAs UFC game will be too much like that god awful EA MMA game.
Mass Effect 3 – March 6th
Another game that I reviewed this year, so I won’t go into it here. I will say that most people will say this should go into a worst games list, but that’s BS. If you look at 95% of the game, it’s GOTY contender for sure! I had a freakin’ blast playing Mass Effect 3 all the way up to the last 45 mins or so. But if you take out those 45 mins, I still spent a good 35 hours having a great time! And ever since they released the extended cut endings, it helped a lot. Didn’t do what the fans thought it would but those thoughts were just fantasies, they were never going to happen. I took it for what it was, and what it was was a much better explanation of the ending.
MLB 12 The Show – March 6th
I wanted to write a review for this game, which I feel will still stand as my favorite sports title of the year when 2012 wraps up. But I just, I don’t know, never got around to it or didn’t feel a sports game warranted my style of review. I find it hard to write a review where literally everyone’s experiences can differ. A player who isn’t used to the game and strikes out 15 times in one game is gonna hate it, but a player like me who has been playing The Show since it first started in 06, I love it more and more every year! They seem to add just enough every year to satisfy us fans until the next game, unlike some sports titles…Madden…
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings – April 17th
Yes, this game is well over a year old and came out in Q2 of 2011, but I don’t have a gaming PC. My PC does good to handle a YouTube video in HD. So when I heard so much good about it I was pretty pissed, I’ll admit. But then the news came later that it was gonna be coming to the Xbox 360 with all the upgrades and stuff the PC had received to that point. Then I got majorly excited! And when I picked up my copy on launch day, I was blown away! Being used to games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, Witcher 2 is NOTHING like those styles of RPG. And usually, a different style from those games doesn’t sit well with me cause I’m so used to them, but this game was different. It was an amazing experience and I seriously hope we get a sequel on consoles without having to wait a year.
Trials Evolution – April 18th
When I first heard about Trials HD on the Xbox Live Arcade, I thought I wasn’t going to like it. Then it came out, but I wasn’t sold so I downloaded the demo. I fired it up and was instantly a fan! It’s a realistic physics-based race against the clock, and I was hooked 110%! But I always felt weird in a next gen game having to take turns when I had friends over. So when they announced multiplayer on Trials Evolution, I got pumped! And I wasn’t let down when it released! From racing online to the scenery outside to the INSANE jumps and stunts; it’s a must buy.
The Walking Dead Episode 1 – April 25th
This was a game I wasn’t too sure about when I first started seeing pictures and hearing things. I typically like that Telltale style of games, especially the Back to the Future game! Love that title! But when I played their Jurassic Park game, I was shocked at how little effort it seemed they put into it. So when this game released, I knew I wasn’t going to buy it day one like I did with BTTF, if I was gonna buy it at all. So I downloaded the demo for it, and WOW! I feel in love with it! The atmosphere, the characters, the dialogue, the way it didn’t follow suit with the show. Everything about it, I loved! But little did I know when I bought the season pass that it’d be the last time I played it for a LOOOONG while…
