Sony was once exclusive home to Spider-Man and the colorful characters that lived in his world, but now they’re sort of playing ball with Marvel, so that Spidey can swing into the Avengers films and so that guys like Iron Man can jump into Spider-Man: Homecoming.
But, long before that time we had the criminally under-rated Amazing Spider-Man series, which was hinting at Sinister Six, which would have brought Spider-Man’s villains into the fold and in a big way.
And even longer before that, Venom, one of Spider-Man’s most popular enemies, appeared in Sam Raimi‘s awful Spider-Man 3.
Why am I giving you all of this Spider-Man backstory? Well, because Sony has officially dated a Venom spinoff film, for October of 2018.
No director or actors have been associated with the project just yet, but we do know that this will be a solo outing, with no Spider-Man involvement and we also know that there’s a script floating around, which was penned by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2).
There was also brief rumors about a possible R-rating, although that would make more sense with a Carnage movie.
Although Deadpool and Logan surely are opening up the doors for more mature endeavors when it comes to comic book films, also the notion of making a “side movie” that doesn’t really have anything to do with the rest of the cinematic universe.
That’s all we got for now, but stick around for more info as we get it!
