After Will Ferrell appeared on Conan to publicly announce, in character, that Ron Burgundy would return to the screen in Anchorman 2, the internet has been buzzing with interest in what the film might be about. Director Adam McKay sat down with Empire to talk about the film, and had the following details (though sparse) to share:
“We’ve done about two per cent! Half a per cent? We’ve got five pages of story notes and chunks of story. We’re holing up writing for the next three months.”
So that’s how far they’ve gotten, but what about the story ideas so far?
“It’s right when all the news started changing with the 24-hours news cycle in ’78 or ’79. All of a sudden, local news stations diversified and had Latino anchors and African-American anchors, and any time you’re talking about diversity and the Action News team, that’s always fun to deal with.”
Which I think is fitting, considering that’s basically what Burgundy and company were fighting in Veronica Corningstone, diversity. I’m sure Ferrell and McKay will cook up plenty of gags for the new film, and despite the lack of a screenplay, it seems as though this one has finally been fast-tracked, maybe for next summer if they plan to have the script done by August, that would be a possibility. When we know more, we’ll pass it along.
