Bond fans have been impatiently tapping their feet for years now waiting for a new Bond movie to hit the screens but at least there’s a firm date to now look forward to, with the newest Bond film Skyfall premiering on October 26, 2012 in the UK followed by a US release date of November 9, 2012. Skyfall had a long and winding path to get to this point, with MGM’s financial struggles and eventual bankruptcy filing leading to numerous delays that have pushed back the filming and release of the 23rd installment in the Bond franchise several years. Looking to make lemons from lemonade, Daniel Craig — who will be returning for the third time as Bond — having the following to say in a recent interview with BBC News:
”We haven’t been resting on our laurels. We’ve been plotting what to do with Skyfall. The first one was a whir, the second one was the tricky second album, but this one we’ve really planned and got a great script. The deal for me has always been… to make bigger and better ones. I want to leave my mark, and I feel very much that this one is going to be very different from the last two but still be a great Bond movie.”
Skyfall will venture into new territory as far as the plot, with Bond tasked with saving M16 from destruction and questioning the loyalty of M. Skyfall won’t follow on the preceding action of Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008) and no clear narrative flowing from those movies into Skyfall. So you likely won’t see Bond playing online casino games or trying his hand at the poker tables as in Casino Royale, with an exciting poker hand in that film propelling it onto several Top 5 Classic Casino Movies lists.
A teaser trailer for Skyfall was released on May 21 but left plenty of questions still floating around. Bond and M are shown at various points in the trailer trying to deal with painful events from their past, including a scene with M surrounded by caskets (which some feel substantiates the rumors that M may meet her own end in the movie). Viewers also got their first taste of new Bond girls Bérénice Marlohe and Pirates of the Caribbean star Naomie Harris, as well as a sneak peak at various villains and action scenes.
