Sharlto Copley To Play The Lead Villain In Spike Lee’s Oldboy?

Information has been hush on Spike Lee‘s adaptation of Park Chan-wook‘s revenge classic Oldboy, but Variety is now reporting that District 9 star Sharlto Copley has been officially offered the lead villain role. Clive Owen, Colin Firth and Christian Bale have all passed on the role, which could help boost Copley’s career in a major way after coming off of the box office flop The A-Team.

If he accepts he’ll be joining Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen.

I think this could be the exact role that Copley needs to remind everyone of his talent. District 9 was a breakout role for him, yet he really didn’t go anywhere from there. He’ll be reteaming with D9 director Neill Blomkamp for Elysium and what better way to follow it than Oldboy?

Oldboy is scheduled to enter production later this year with a 2013 release date.

Are you in favor of Copley landing the role or would you have preferred someone else? Let us know in the comments below!
