Despite the fact that she has shot a handful of scenes as Mary Jane Watson in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, actress Shailene Woodley will not be appearing in the sequel. According to Deadline, Sony has confirmed that the Mary Jane character will instead make her first appearance in the third film so that the focus can remain on the relationship between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone).
“I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship,” director Marc Webb explained. “Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”
“Of course I’m bummed,” Shailene Woodley told Entertainment Weekly. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing Mary Jane until the next film.”
It’s certainly strange timing to cut rising star Shailene Woodley from a huge film such as The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Regardless, this shouldn’t sting the young actress too much as she has a few promising films on her slate. She stars in the upcoming romantic drama The Spectacular Now, the potential blockbuster Divergent, and the much-anticipated adaptation of John Green’s novel The Fault In Our Stars.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be in theaters on May 2, 2014. As announced earlier this week, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will be released on June 10, 2016 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 on May 4, 2018.
