Shadowgate is a game that has a special place in my heart. It’s unarguably the most popular title in the MacVenture series (the other three being The Uninvited, Deja Vu, and Deja Vu II) and it is the only game from the aforementioned series to receive a sequel in a generation beyond its inception, as the two Deja Vu games were released within three years of each other. It also has the dubious distinction of being my favorite NES adventure game this side of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Video Game Adventure. Yes, if you put Shadowgate and the original Legend of Zelda (gold cart) in front of me, I would choose to play Shadowgate nine times out of ten. Now, at the ass-end of 2012, independent company Zojoi has successfully reacquired the license to the game and looks to give it a more modern edge, kind of like a heavily altered port. Zojoi is a company founded by the creators of Shadowgate, so it’s a relief to see that the IP is in relatively safe hands.
There’s no release date set in stone for the game, but I would expect it sometime during 2013 on Windows and Mac, as well as iOS and Android devices. As of the time of this writing, there are still 14 days for the game to meet its goal of $120,000 on Kickstarter (and it’s at $73,500!), so get the word out, and you yourself can make a pledge at the official Shadowgate Kickstarter page.
