The trailer for the new film starring Jack Black has hit the internet this morning thanks to Yahoo! Movies. The dark comedy, directed by hit-and-miss director Richard Linklater comes out on April 27th, and the film co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Shirley McClaine. Most of Linklater’s best work are the films he does independently, which are most often his passion projects. Linlater and Black have teamed up before, in the studio hit School of Rock, but with Bernie, we’re in for much different fare.
While even Linklater’s Bad News Bears remake had a bit of a dark side to it, nothing compares to the dark laughs that we’re in for with Bernie. The official synopsis is listed as:
“In small-town Texas, the local mortician strikes up a friendship with a wealthy widow, though when he kills her, he goes to great lengths to create the illusion that she’s alive.”
Black plays Bernie, the creepy mortician, but that’s not the weirdest part. The story is based on a real article written in Texas Monthly by Skip Hollandsworth, who also co-wrote the script with Linklater. In an interesting twist, the film features interviews with the residents of the small town where this story took place. It’s good to see Jack Black doing something other than films aimed at children, and it’s always nice to see Matthew McConaughey being put to good use and not wasted in a mindless rom-com.
