Second Identity Thief Trailer Is A Step In The Right Direction

Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon‘s upcoming comedy Identity Thief sounded like a hilarious concept on paper, but almost instantly cancelled itself out when the first trailer debuted, which tried selling us hard on Melissa McCarthy‘s crazy antics and Jason Bateman‘s attempt to remain calm and collected, even though someone just stole his identity.

I’m a Bateman fan, but I’m having a hard time seeing him work with McCarthy, if only because she’s falling into Zach Galifianakis territory aka playing the same over-the-top role in each and every film since her success in Bridesmaids.

Luckily for us this second trailer tones her down a lot and hints more at the darker humor shared between her and Bateman. I love that Bateman reaches that point where he’s done being nice and simply does whatever he can to get McCarthy’s character to go with him. The car scene at the end of the trailer is great and some of their first encounters revealed show us that Gordon hasn’t lost his R-rated mentality.

Could Identity Thief be any good when it comes out on February 8th of 2013 or will it be another McCarthy over-exaggerated role, with Bateman playing Bateman?
