THR is reporting that Fox has hired writer Scott Z. Burns (The Informant! and Contagion) to draft the sequel to the surprise hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It has already been announced that director Rupert Wyatt will return for the sequel, as well as Andy Serkis for the motion capture work involved in making Caesar come to life.
THR reports that the vague synopsis that Scott Z. Burns will be writing from is as follows:
“The new project is taking the story to the next level, with the apes on the path to emerge as society’s new rulers.”
Burns has proven himself more than once to be a serious writer that dives fully into the concept, and while he’s never done a sequel so far, I’m curious to see what he comes up with and exactly which events will lead to the apes taking over Earth.
