Variety reports that Samuel L. Jackson has signed on to play the villain in Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service. Jackson has joined the cast that includes Colin Firth, Michael Caine, and newcomer Taron Edgerton. The film, based on the comic series by Mark Millar and David Gibbons, centers on a veteran spy (Firth) who takes his young punk nephew (Edgerton) under his wing.
Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass and X-Men First Class) and co-writer and producer Jane Goldman aren’t giving any details away about Jackson’s villain role. Recently, Matthew Vaughn has been seeking an A-List actor to play the film’s villain. It’s been reported that Vaughn had approached Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio for the role. The next role that needs to be cast is the female lead. Vaughn is reportedly eyeing Emma Watson and Dark Shadows actress Bella Heathcote.
Samuel L. Jackson can be seen next in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake this November, MGM’s Robocop next February, and Marvel’s Captain America: Winter Soldier next April.
The Secret Service is expected to begin production this fall for a 2014 release. Check back for more updates as they come our way.
