A lot of people were getting their panties in a bunch when word start swirling around regarding Skyfall director Sam Mendes returning for Bond 24. While I enjoyed Skyfall a lot I must say that I wasn’t all too worried about who they were going to get to direct the next installment, because we’ve seen good Bond directors go on to make horrible Bond sequels and for all we know Skyfall was a result of luck and perfect timing.
I liked it, but not nearly as much as the rest of the world, which is very odd, because I’m a big Sam Mendes fan. I’ve liked every single film that he’s made (that I’ve seen) and Skyfall just might be one of the least memorable.
Mendes recently spoke with Empire and said the following:
It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie. Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond.
He’s clearly still interested in the character and the Bond series as a whole, but he’s also got a lot of time invested in other projects that he’d like to see get made.
I’m glad he skipped on Bond for now. There’s always a chance for him to return later down the road.
