Ryan Murphy, best known for being the creator of Glee, American Horror Story, and The New Normal, is no stranger to directing. He has stepped behind the camera to direct the 2006 film Running With Scissors and has since then directed Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts. Murphy is set to reunite with Julia Roberts to direct The Normal Heart for HBO Films. The film is an adaptation of Larry Kramer’s Tony-award winning play that centers on the HIV-AIDS epidemic in New York in the early 1980s and the activists who attempt to bring attention to the crisis.
Julia Roberts will be portraying Dr. Emma Brookner, a paraplegic physician who treats some of the disease’s earliest victims at the start of the crisis. The film is also set to star Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer. Ruffalo will be portraying Ned Weeks, a gay activist who attempts to raise awareness of the disease. Bomer will be portraying a reporter Felix Turner who becomes romantically involved with Ned. It is heavily rumored that Alec Baldwin and Jim Parsons will be joining the cast but no official announcement has been made at this point.
The stage production of The Normal Heart debuted at the Public Theater in New York in 1985 and was later revived in Broadway 26 years later in 2011. The film adaptation, which is written by Larry Kramer himself, will begin production in New York later this year for a 2014 release.
