The newest international trailer for Fox’s upcoming Apes reboot/prequel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes is out now and it’s pretty awesome. This trailer focuses more on the character of Caesar. It gives us a bit more background on the ape and most importantly it makes him feel like an actual character. This Apes film is going in an entirely different direction than the other films because it will be using state of the art CGI technology for the apes instead of practical suits and make-up. WETA is providing the CGI and it is looking stunning. WETA was responsible for some of the work on James Cameron‘s Avatar a few years back and I think you can sort of notice that by seeing how well rendered the apes are.
I really like how this is shaping up to resemble District 9 as far as giving CGI characters actual depth and emotion. That was truly one of the first times I really felt for a character that was fully done with effects and Rise of the Planet of the Apes might be able to pull off that same feeling again with the character of Caesar.
I’m still worried that this film won’t click with audiences. Most of the trailers keep promoting the action heavy last act, which is indeed going to be towards the end of the film. I’m assuming the bulk of the film will play out exactly like the title suggests, the RISE of the apes. But people are stupid and only expect what the trailer delivers. So I can imagine a lot of people walking out saying that it was slow and it dragged and there wasn’t any action until the last bit. I’m fine with a slower pace as long as there is an engaging story with interesting characters.
One can hope right?
Rise of the Planet of the Apes stars James Franco, Andy Serkis and Freida Pinto. It will be hitting theaters on August 5th, 2011.
