Yes, Vin Diesel‘s Riddick is still coming to a big screen near you. Awhile back we discussed the troubles surrounding the production, with Diesel revealing that he’d have to work for scale if he wanted the R-rating that they were so desperately looking for.
To be honest, the only reason a third Riddick film would even work is if it had an R-rating. Pitch Black was great and benefited from the darker tone, while The Chronicles of Riddick was a decent sequel, but something that failed to connect with that original theme established and instead became another watered down and much more expensive sequel.
I’m not sure if Diesel and director David Twohy got their R, but the film will be coming out regardless on September 6th, 2013. Universal will also be ramping it up with an IMAX release. I wonder if it’s going to get post-converted to 3D too.
Hopefully a trailer or a new batch of stills leak soon.
“The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.”
