Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis almost took home Oscar gold last night. She didn’t end up winning, but I doubt that will bother the young star as she moves onto bigger projects.
Sony has officially confirmed her to star in the upcoming Annie remake, which is being produced by Will Smith and Jay-Z. At one point Smith’s own daughter was planning on taking the role, but she grew out of it and ever since they’ve been searching for the right young individual to breathe fresh air into the character.
I think she’ll do great in the role. Even though I didn’t care for Beasts all that much I certainly wouldn’t have been upset if she took home the Oscar gold. She delivered a very moving performance and I can’t wait to see how she handles the role of Annie.
Here’s a quote from a Columbia Pictures executive regarding the casting decision:
With the recent Academy Award® nomination and critical acclaim, Quvenzhané Wallis is a true star and we believe her portrayal as Annie will make her a true worldwide star. She is an extraordinary young talent with an amazing range, not only as an actress but as a singer and dancer, and we can’t wait for audiences to further discover her.
They’re hoping to get Annie out by winter time of 2014.
