Alex Kurtzman has been responsible for writing/producing some big Hollywood blockbusters in the past few years. He’s done work on Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek, Transformers and even Mission Impossible III. His first film as a director however, is a dramatic character piece called People Like Us. It features Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks, Olivia Wilde and Jon Favreau and it doesn’t look like anything he has ever worked on before.
That’s not saying it looks great or anything, but it definitely looks like a change of pace for someone who usually writes thin characters and focuses on explosive set pieces. People Like Us looks a lot more focused on the actual characters, which can be a good thing if done properly.
The film follows a man in debt, played by Chris Pine, who is tasked with giving $150,000 of his deceased fathers fortune to a sister he’s never met, played by Elizabeth Banks. The first trailer is here, provided by Moviefone, and while it doesn’t look overly impressive or anything it does look like something that could elevate Pine’s career just a little higher. Star Trek was the one that got him on the map and he’s slowly been making his way into the mainstream with stuff like Unstoppable and This Means War.
People Like Us will open on June 29th, 2012.
