Last night, Universal unveiled their first trailer for the highly-anticipated Furious 7, which is the latest installment in their Fast & Furious franchise, starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and many more.
Surprisingly so, the trailer features a lot of Paul Walker, which had many talking after his sudden death, because nobody was sure just how much director James Wan and his crew had filmed before the passing of one of the series’ core stars. Walker left quite a mark on the series and his death is without a doubt a tragedy, but it will be great being able to see him once more in a film that he no doubt had a lot of heart and soul invested into.
Director James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring and Insidious 1 & 2) takes over for Justin Lin and with that comes a few new actors to the mix, mainly Jason Statham and Kurt Russell.
The first trailer looks great, focusing heavily on a big-budget sequence towards the beginning of the film, while also expanding the locales and giving each character their moment in the sun. I think that it’s great seeing Wan back behind the camera of an action flick, after maturing as a filmmaking primarily shooting horror, with the under-rated revenge gem Death Sentence being the one exception.
Fast Five is easily the best of the series, while Fast & Furious 6 sort of takes a step back in quality and a giant step forward being an over-the-top cheese-fest, but I’m willing to put things aside to see what a new cast and crew can do to the picture, plus the altering of the overall film due to Walker’s passing.
I really hope that this film gives him the proper sendoff that he deserves and doesn’t end up as a complete mess.
