Oh, The Anticipation…

2012 was a pretty solid year in the metalsphere.  We saw new releases from some of the giants, and a lot of awesome releases from the not-so-well-knowns, and all in all it overtook 2011 by leaps and bounds.

So as we tear down our calendars and cross off another year without an apocalypse, let’s take a look at some of the upcoming releases that have my drawers wet with delight.

In no particular order.

The Ocean – TBD (April 30, 2013)

the ocean

The Ocean are by far one of my favorite bands.  They released their double album Heliocentric/Anthropocentric back in 2010 to great critical acclaim (and what turned out to be my favorite album(s) of the year).  Helio/Anthro were the first records to feature the band’s first ever solid lineup and the results were stunning; seeing the band release their greatest work to date.

The same lineup still stands for the new release, and I have to say I am very excited about this.

From guitarist/main songwriter Robin Staps:

The new album will be a single album containing 52 minutes of new music. It will be mixed by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, …) in January and will come in 2 versions: instrumental and with vocals. The album was originally written to be instrumental, but in the end me and Loic couldn’t help but try out a few things vocalwise and we soon got pretty excited… so there will be vocals on the album; however, we want everyone to have both versions, and we are also planning to perform the album live that way – with and without vocals.”

This will be the first album the band has released that is not a “double album” of sorts, and to be honest I am quite excited to see the band distill their expansive vision into one collection of songs rather than two.  I’m also pretty intrigued about the instrumental version.  Given the band’s spectacular ability to convey emotion and atmosphere through their music alone, it will be very interesting to see what transpires.

Intronaut – Habitual Levitations (March 19, 2013)

I’ve followed this band since the very beginning, and they just keep getting better and more honed in with every release.  2011’s Valley Of Smoke saw the band drift into proggier territory and the results were stunning.  There’s so much talent and drive in this band that I can’t wait to see what they’ve got up their sleeves this time.  I’m sure it’s nothing anyone will expect.

Unfortunately, not too much info has been released regarding the album, but here’s a snippet of the band working in the studio to tide you over.

Kvelertak – Meir (Sometime in March…) kvelertak Shit yes!  I’ve been waiting for the follow up to arguably one of the best records of the 2000’s, Kvelertak‘s Self-Titled debut, for what seems like waaaaayyy too long. And it’s finally coming!  The band have been at God City Studios with legendary mixes-every-album-ever producer Kurt Ballou since the fall and have even given the record a title (see above). The band’s vehement decision to never sing in English still hold strong on this one, as they’ve released a track listing along with some (pretty hilarious/awesome) explanations regarding their meanings.

A feather clad man breaks into your skull. He has such sights to show you! SPRING FRA LIVET When the walls of life are closing in, you best run for the hills!
Trepanning is a surgical intervention in which a hole is drilled into the human skull, releasing evil spirits.
Burn the bridges, kill the jailer, live life on the run!
An unholy pact has doomed this man to walk the earth until the end of time.
This dark tyrants whip is made of hair and flesh. He will leave scars across the land.
In the cold light of the moon you become possessed by evil.
A green meteor of iron strikes the graveyard. An intergalactic traveller won’t leave until everything around him is dead.
Nothing matters. We’re not even a grain of sand in Cosmos.
There is a storm coming. All you can do is pray!
Like the Asgardsreia we will have all the mortals in our way join our cavalcade.”
You can also watch their series of in-studio videos here.  There’s even a few snippets of new material!  Get psyched for what is sure to be one of the best records of 2013!
Agoraphobic Nosebleed – 3 As-Yet-Untitled Records! (Unknown) agoraphobic nosebleed Yes, you read that right.  Legendary spaz-grinders Agoraphobic Nosebleed will be releasing not 1, not 2, but 3 records in the coming year.  Each one will feature one of the band’s 3 vocalists! Vocalist J. Randall had this to say about the band, via their Facebook page:

To answer the question of what’s next for ANB – Kat, Rich and myself are each heading up our own independent full lengths with Hull, finishing off with a solo release by Scott. Each one will be a completely different style/ direction from the next -idea is to make ANB even more of a genre-less effort. Recording has all ready begun and they will most likely be released within a month or two of each other starting probably forth quarter 2013. More details as they develop.

Suffice it to say, I’m a HUGE ANb fan, so this has got me pumped!  And with the disappointment that was Book Burner, I can’t wait to see what axe-man/drum-machiner/mastermind Scott Hull comes up with for these releases.  If it’s anything like their last full length, Agorapocalypse, I will most likely blow my load so hard my dick will fall off.   Devourment – Conceived In Sewage (February 19, 2013)   devourment conceived in sewageEveryone’s favorite slam-tastic BDM outfit finally returns with their first new album in 4 years!  From the 2 teasers the band has released, and the fact that they’re signed with Relapse Records, I have very high hopes for this one.  Their last record, Unleash The Carnivore, was a let down to say the least, so it’s up to CIS t0 live up to the reputation this beast of a band has become.   Check out the album teaser below.

Other records I’m excitebike for:
Shai Hulud – Reach Beyond The Sun (February 19, 2013)
The Devin Townsend Project – Casualties Of Cool (Unknown)
Rotten Sound – Species At War EP (January 18, 2013)
