Even though the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recently ruled out the possibility for a Golden Globe nomination for Scarlett Johansson, that’s not stopping a push for potential awards season glory for Spike Jonze’s latest film Her, which follows a lonely writer (Joaquin Phoenix) who becomes romantically involved with Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), an advanced operating system. Warner Bros. revealed a fantastic second trailer for the film, which you can check out below.
Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, “her” follows Theodore Twombly, a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.
The song featured in the beginning of the trailer is Arcade Fire’s new song Supersymmetry, which was originally written and recorded specifically for the film but was later included as its own track on the band’s latest album Reflektor. The film looks like it’ll be a fascinating and quite beautiful examination on relationships. The rest of the cast includes Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt, and Portia Doubleday.
Her will be released in limited theaters starting on December 18th and will open nationwide on January 10th. What do you think of the latest trailer?
