FilmDistrict has released new images from Spike Lee’s upcoming Oldboy remake or “reinterpretation” starring Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Olsen. Check out the new images below.
The film follows the story of an advertising executive (Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation. Samuel L. Jackson, Rami Malek, Hannah Simone, and Michael Imperioli co-star.
Judging from the fantastic red band trailer that was released earlier this summer, it appears that Spike Lee has brought something new to the table rather than rehashing Park Chan-wook’s 2003 masterpiece. To solidify confirmation that Lee is aiming for something different, The Playlist reported that Lee and Brolin got Park Chan-wook’s blessing before filming commenced. “Brolin went to Park Chan-wook and asked for his blessing,” Lee said. “He told Josh ‘you and Spike make your own film, don’t remake ours.’ And that’s what we did.”
Oldboy will open in theaters nationwide on November 27th.
