Earlier this year, production began on Sofia Coppola’s next feature effort titled The Bling Ring starring Emma Watson and a cast of young unknowns portraying teenage criminals. Details of the film’s production have been kept very minimal over the last few months besides a few on set photos making their way online earlier this spring. The set photos that have been seen feature a mature Emma Watson in the lead role and Kristen Dunst in what is presumed to be a cameo role in the film.
Based on a true story, The Bling Ring centers on a group of celebrity-obsessed teenagers in Los Angeles who pulled off heists of celebrity homes between October 2008 and August 2009. It’s been reported that the teenagers stole $3 million worth of possessions from likes of Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Rachel Bilson, Lindsay Lohan, Megan Fox, and Audrina Patridge. Courtesy of Indiewire, new stills from The Bling Ring from this month’s issue of Premiere magazine have made its way online. Check out the two images below:
Personally, I’m a fan of Sofia Coppola’s directorial work. Her last feature Somewhere is criminally underrated but unfortunately failed to connect with the audience and critics.. I’m looking forward to checking out The Bling Ring. I’m unfamiliar with the details of the true story in which the film is based on but it seems like the subject matter is a perfect fit for Coppola’s filmography.
Premiere Magazine also reveals that the film has already been picked up for distribution in Europe and has set a release date in June of 2013. Since it’s slated for a June release, it’s wise to predict that the film will be premiering at Cannes Film Festival next May. As of right now, rights for distribution in the United States have not been set.
