Karl Urban will be playing the character of Judge Dredd in the upcoming Judge Dredd remake simply called Dredd. The original film from 1995 starred Sylvester Stallone and it was considered a failure. I’ve never actually seen the film, but I haven’t heard much about it, which usually means it was passable.
I am however interested in this remake, directed by Pete Travis, mainly because I like Karl Urban and because the character sounds interesting and bad ass. It seems like they are trying to distance themselves as much as possible from the original by going with a new title and basing most of the movie off of the British comic.
True to source material is always a plus in my book. Can’t say that I am really excited for this one, but I am curious.
No U.S. release date has been announced, but it should be coming out in the U.K. sometime this December.

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
