After Neill Blomkamp’s second film Elysium topped the box office a little over a week ago, Sony has announced that they’re partnering up with Media Rights Capital to produce, finance, and distribute Blomkamp’s sci-fi follow-up titled Chappie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony has now given the film a release date of March 27th, 2015. On that specific date, the film will go up against the animated feature The Penguins Of Madagascar.
Chappie centers on a robot (voiced by District 9 and Elysium actor Sharlto Copley) with artificial intelligence that is stolen by two local gangsters (Ninja and Yolandi Visser of the rap duo Die Antwoord) who plan to use it for their own nefarious purposes. Blomkamp will direct the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with his wife Terri Tatchell. Blomkamp and Tatchell previously collaborated on the Oscar-nominated screenplay for District 9.
Production begins this fall in South Africa.
