Warner Bros. has released a fantastic first trailer and poster for Spike Jonze’s new film Her starring Joaquin Phoenix. In the unordinary romance, Phoenix stars as a lonely and heartbroken writer who falls in love with an advanced operating system named Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Check out the trailer and poster below.
Set in Los Angeles, slightly in the future, Her follows Theodore Twombly (Phoenix), a complex, soulful man who makes his living writing touching, personal letters for other people. Heartbroken after the end of a long relationship, he becomes intrigued with a new, advanced operating system, which promises to be an intuitive entity in its own right, individual to each user. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha” (Johansson), a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other. From the unique perspective of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze comes an original love story that explores the evolving nature—and the risks—of intimacy in the modern world.
Out of all the films being released later this year, this one is the most intriguing. Clearly this is a strange twist on romance that shouldn’t be missed. Spike Jonze is one of the most talented filmmakers in the business. His films are rather unusual but are profoundly beautiful. Judging from the trailer, Her looks like it’s going to be a perfect fit in the director’s repertoire.
Her will be released in limited theaters on November 20th. I’m willing to bet that the film will show up at a film festival before its theatrical release. Perhaps Toronto, Venice, or New York? The cast includes Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, Portia Doubleday, and Sam Jaeger. What do you think of the trailer?
