That’s right, you heard it correctly. Paramount has announced that Michael Bay, director of Transformers 1 through 3 is returning to the series for a fourth outing, which according to him will be a “re-imagining”. He’s been telling everyone that he was done with the series after Dark of the Moon, but seeing as how the movie is one of the highest grossing films of all-time you’d think it must have been fairly easy for Paramount to persuade Bay to return to the series for another entry.
Instead of passing the torch or doing a full-on sequel it looks like Bay is going to reboot the series. Now I’ve heard two different takes on what Bay plans to do with the fourth Transformers film. The first is saying that it will be a loose sequel as in he’ll take minor characters from the previous films and give them bigger roles, which would help explain the lack of Shia LaBeouf. I’ve also read that he’s going to do a straight-up reboot. Now I’m not sure if that means re-establishing the whole connection between humans and the Transformers or if that means he’s simply going to set the film elsewhere and possibly during a different time period.
I honestly don’t care what he’s going to do. The first film was decent, the second was a wreck and the third was a fun 3D spectacle, but nothing more. I was happy when I heard he was done with the series and now I’m upset seeing him return. Give it to someone else already or just stop making the films and focus on something else.
The only reason he’s doing this is because he’ll get a chance to shoot his dream project, Pain and Gain with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson. That one will start production soon and Transformers 4 will start after, with a June 29th, 2014 release date.
Is anyone excited for another Transformers film or have you all accepted that Bay was moving on?
