Since 2009’s Crack The Skye obliterated the Billboard Charts and stunned metalheads the world over, there’s been a lot of talk as to how Mastodon would follow up such a rousing success. I personally loved Crack The Skye and its refreshing mix of blues, prog, and jam styles all shrouded under the mask of Mastodon‘s unique (and often imitated) brand of metal.
Last week we got our first glimpse into their new album, The Hunter, when the band released the album’s cover art (pictured above). It’s definitely a departure from their old album covers, which were all designed by Paul Romano, but it definitely suits the band’s style. Now the real treat has arrived as the band have released a teaser trailer for the album, featuring ONE FULL MINUTE of their new song “Black Tongue“! Watch it here.
So far I’m loving the little snippet they’ve doled out. It’s definitely Mastodon but, as is expected from them, it’s a clear evolution from their past records and I, unlike a lot of the elitist metal underground, am all for progression. Aside from the ounce of new material the video offers, there’s not much more info other than a projected release in the fall. I’m hoping the images are a little taste of what we can expect when they inevitably tour to promote the release of the album, assuming that they will have a projector like they did on their Crack The Skye tours.
Though The Hunter doesn’t seem to be a reprisal of the shape-shifting sound they became known for on their first two albums, as I know a lot of fans were hoping for, it’s still Mastodon, and I can’t wait to hear what the rest of the album offers up.
In the meantime, make sure to pick up a copy of Mastodon‘s live CD+DVD Live At The Aragon. You can grab it here.
