Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber starring in a film together sounds like one odd combo that just might work. According to The Film Stage Paramount approached Wahlberg for an untitled basketball drama that would star an older actor and a younger actor. Wahlberg had this to say when he was initially approached:
“Think of, like The Color of Money. So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘ Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garret Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’”
I have no problem with Mark Wahlberg in a gritty basketball drama, but Justin Bieber, are you serious? I’ll give the man the benefit of the doubt here, but I just don’t know if he can do it. We’ve been wrong before when Wahlberg himself came from a so-so singing group and became an actor nominated for Oscar gold. The pairing sounds unlikely, but that’s when things like this tend to work.
The untitled basketball drama is being directed by How to Make It in America creator Ian Edelman.
