In 2009 director Marcus Dunstan‘s horror film The Collector was released on a limited number of theaters against Judd Apatow‘s Funny People. The film is a mix between a slasher flick and a Saw flick, with frequent Saw writers Patrick Melton and Dunstan himself behind the script.
I really enjoyed the film. In a time where quality horror must be found overseas, The Collector came out and provided the audience with lots of gore and a twisty (but admittedly dumb) story that involved a thief robbing a house only to later find out that a killer is torturing the family in the basement.
It’s that sort of simplistic, but yet effective movie-making that I love and I can’t believe not another soul in the world enjoyed the movie!
Anyways, the reason I’m posting this article is because Marcus Dunstan made a sequel and it’s called The Collection. The film will be playing at Fantastic Fest 2012 (via Bad Ass Digest) and then get a theatrical release later this year on November 30th, 2012.
The plot is a little flimsy and kind of goes against where the last film ended, but it brings back our central character Arkin (Josh Stewart, now of The Dark Knight Rises fame) as he goes up against the weird human-collecting sicko yet again. I’m really doubting that the sequel will capture that magic feeling that I found so refreshing in the original, but I’m still holding out hope. I’m surprised a sequel even got the go-ahead, let alone is getting a theatrical release. I know the first film was made on the cheap end, but it still didn’t stir up any conversation and it took almost a damn year to make it to Blu-ray.
Here’s an official plot synopsis for The Collection:
When Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) friends take her to a secret party at an undisclosed location, she never imagined she would become the latest victim of The Collector, a psychopathic killer. The Collector kidnaps and transports her to an abandoned hotel he’s transformed into his own private maze of torture and death. Upon learning of his daughter’s disappearance, Elena’s wealthy father (Christopher McDonald) hires a group of mercenaries to retrieve her from the vicious grips of The Collector. These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through the gruesome labyrinth. Now, Arkin finds himself fighting for his own life in order to save Elena. “The Collection,” directed by Marcus Dunstan and written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton, is a suspense horror film with nonstop thrills at every turn, starring Josh Stewart (The Dark Knight Rises), Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network), and Christopher McDonald (Requiem for a Dream). LD Entertainment will release The Collection in theaters November 30, 2012.
