Sony has a lot invested in their newly revived Spider-Man franchise. Director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield somehow managed to bring new life to the popular comic book character in The Amazing Spider-Man and now folks are ready to line up for this summer’s upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, despite the reveal of three villains.
When Sam Raimi directed this many bad guys under one roof, things got messy and the result was what most consider to be the worst Spider-Man film yet, Spider-Man 3.
I believe that Webb and Sony are handling things a little differently this time around, with a strong focus on the characters and the new universe that they’re trying to create, which spawns much further than just Amazing Spider-Man sequels, but a Sinister Six film and a solo Venom film.
This means that Sony wants things in order and running smoothly for as long as possible.
This leads us to the confirmation of Marc Webb returning as director of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, since they locked him in for #2. The big question now is what is the plan for future installments? Word is that Sony wants a new Spider-Man at least every other year, if not yearly. Garfield has only signed on for three films, which means that he’s going to eventually move on and do something else.
Will Webb stick around a little longer too?
Only time will tell!
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 slings into theaters in May.
