Today, Deadline has the news that is both bitter for some, and sweet for others, depending on who you are, and what your level of patience is. Robert Rodriguez has long been trying to get Sin City 2 off the ground, and about 6 months ago, screenwriter William Monahan said that he was working on some rewrites of the script, so people thought it would be finally moving after infinite delays, the first caused by Rodriguez’ divorce, to be followed by a few films for kids, and his half of Grindhouse, which included the fake trailer to the film Machete, starring everyone’s favorite Mexican, Danny Trejo.
When that trailer caught fire on the internet, he decided to make it into an actual movie, and with the help of his longtime editor Ethan Maniquis they released Machete into wide release in 2010. Although many loved the film, I for one was not overly impressed, the film felt bloated and much of the comedy felt forced, although the level of violence was to expectations. Since, Rodriguez has spoken about making a sequel called Machete Kills, and it looks like now that will be a reality. Rodriguez has said recently that it’s possible that Machete Kills and Sin City 2 would shoot around the same time, but it’s looking like Sin City 2 might yet sit on the back burner even longer while this gets underway.
The synopsis for Machete Kills is said to be:
“Machete is recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.”
This is not the first time the space aspect has been mentioned, as Rodriguez has also said that he would like to make a 3rd film, Machete Kills Again! that would take the character to outer space in a space opera, exploiting yet another corner of the grindhouse world. Rodriguez expresses his plan to have a trailer for Machete Kills Again! stuck onto the front of Machete Kills, but we’ll only see when the movie comes out, I suppose. There’s no word on whether Rodriguez will direct alone, or if one of his cohorts will join him, or whether he’ll just produce, but apparently he has been reworking the script by Kyle Ward to get ready to shoot later this year. Only time will tell for sure.
